Young Female Athlete of 2022 – Isla Gauld – Highland Dance

Isla, 14 years old, is a champion highland dancer. 2022 has been Isla’s most successful year. Isla placed 5th overall in the World in the 14-year-old category at the Highland Dance World Championships, also earning herself a place in the World Juvenile finals.

Isla danced in the Scottish National Championships, placing 3rd overall. Isla also gained 3 championship titles during 2022, as well as placing in 15 championship lineups (Commonwealth, European, City of Aberdeen etc) Isla won the Kingdom of Fife Open Championship, and 2 confined- the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire Championship (which qualifies Isla for the Aberdeenshire Team at the Highlands & Islands Festival in Oban) and the Grampian Region Championship.

During the highland games season, a dancer’s league is held culminating at the Braemar Highland Games. Isla placed runner up in the league and had the experience of dancing for the then Prince Charles. Isla has had the opportunity to dance with her secondary school at events such as at Edinburgh Castle for ‘Beating of the Retreat’ Isla has also volunteered in class, assisting with the younger students, and danced at care homes for events such as the Queen’s Jubilee.
